The Worst Sporting Event Ever

I had the pleasure last night of witnessing quite possibly the worst sporting event I have ever seen. The Alabama/Auburn basketball game was a joke. Poorly played, poorly executed and poorly coached. I was an Anthony Grant supporter when he first came to the Capstone, and I really got behind him in year two, but after watching the dismal performance of his team in out of conference play and against Tennessee and Auburn this year, I'm no longer on his side. He should be fired, and the sooner the better.

Stats from last night's game - try not to laugh

First Half Score - Alabama 23 Auburn 13 - Yeah, you read that right

Second Half Score Alabama 14 Auburn 36

Final Score Auburn 49 Alabama 37  - Before you give Auburn too much credit, most of their second half point came from free throws as Alabama fouled at the end of the game.

Auburn scored 13 points in the first half and Alabama 14 in the second. That is ridiculous. The only time I have ever been on a basketball team that scored less than 40 points in a game is if we were only playing to twenty.

Alabama Field Goal Perc. 28.6%   3-point Perc. 10.5% - Yeah, you read that right too

Auburn Field Goal Perc.  34.1%  3point Perc. 22.2%

It woulda been nice to think that this was a defensive battle by two teams, but the stats show otherwise. The stats show that somehow, Auburn and Alabama have managed to hand out scholarships to basketball players that can't play basketball. Either that or Barbee and Grant are so bad at their jobs, that they are actually taking skill away from players. Either way, both coaches should be given their walking papers.

Just as a comparison I will use another in state rival from our neighbors next door to show you what a decent (not great but decent) basketball game looks like.

Final Score Ole Miss - 93  Mississippi State - 75

Field Goal Perc. Ole Miss 50.8%  Miss. St. 43%
3 - point Perc. Ole Miss 37.5%   Miss St. 21.3%

Again, not anything spectacular, just normal. No wonder we like football so much around here, when we have teams like this representing us on the hardwood. I think last night I watched my last Grant coached basketball game and if I was an Auburn fan, I'd say the same of Barber. I'm now officially in protest of Anothony Grant and his team. Four years is plenty of time to turn around a basketball team. Hell, Nick Saban turned around an entire football program in two.

  1. So let's contrast and compare. 2010 Iron Bowl. Auburn scores 7 points late in the 1st half to Alabama's 24. Total domination. 2nd half Alabama plays uninspired football. Defense folds tent, Ingram totals 36 yd in 10 tries, Richardson 24 in 10. Sounds like a Cam allergy to me.

  2. Yeah. I agree in the comparison, but that was an edge of your seat game regardless of who you were pulling for. I would rather be shot than have to sit through the Alabama-Auburn basketball crap I watched the other night. It was poorly played, poorly coached and all around sucked. I loathed it.
